"It would not be an exaggeration to say that the Democrats’ nomination of Obama as their candidate for president has done more to improve America’s image abroad — an image dented by the Iraq war, President Bush’s invocation of a post-9/11 “crusade,” Abu Ghraib, Guantánamo Bay and the xenophobic opposition to Dubai Ports World managing U.S. harbors — than the entire Bush public diplomacy effort for seven years." Thomas L. Friedman, "Obama on the Nile", NY Times 6/11/08

10/16/08 It struck me that there was one thing that McCain could have said in last evenings debate that might have swayed my vote. He would have given this answer when asked what spending cuts would be made to accomodate the dismal financial state of the union:

"I will immediately cut the budget of the Department of Homeland Security to the bone. Pre-9/11 airport security, border and port protocols will be reinstated. All TSA screeners will be reassigned as greeters, particularly at ports of entry. They will serve our country as personal ambassadors and baggage carriers, to foreigners and citizens alike. We will, my friends, provide educational grants for this kind of public service. Joe the Plumber, your tax debt will be forgiven in exchange for warm and friendly chit-chat."

He wouldn't even have to mean it. And I wouldn't believe him if he said it. I would still feel more secure.
