Can you find a light gray spot centered on an intersection of black lines? Most people percieve illusory peripheral light spots while visually scanning the image. It works better at full view.

This grid illusion was first reported by Ludimar Hermann in 1870. There is no current consensus of the neural mechanism causing the illusion. See Michael's examples and discussion.

This variation, with many line widths, works well at different viewing distances and with reversed contrast.

I see them when I don't look right at them. When I look right at them, then they go away, but not instantly, I can see them fade away.
